TIME + SPACE worked in partnership with British screenwriter Steven Knight CBE over a two-year period to help bring the Peaky Blinders feature film Immortal Man “home” to Birmingham.
Appointed as Development Manager, we led the transformation of a 10 acre former waste disposal compound in Digbeth into a meanwhile film studio campus - forming the first phase of a wider masterplan in partnership with Brydell Partners and funded by Homes England.
Our initial role was advisory to prepare and secure a business case to unlock seed funding from Homes England. This enabled the capital works required to retrofit a 40,000 sq ft industrial shed into a high-specification set-build facility capable of supporting premium film and television production.
Alongside the physical development, Time and Space created the Digbeth Loc. Studios brand and operating platform. We worked closely with West Midlands Growth Company to deliver a high-profile media launch event on-site in March 2023. The event, hosted by Piers Read and Mayor Andy Street, brought together key stakeholders including Andy local political leaders and UB40.
To establish an early presence and community anchor, we also delivered a fully fitted headquarters at Minerva Works. This included a brand-new reception space and flexible co-working environment designed to support local creatives and host industry events - creating a focal point for Digbeth Loc. Studios during the development phase.
Despite industry-wide disruption caused by the Hollywood writers’ and actors’ strikes, construction works progressed and were completed in late 2024, enabling the campus to support production linked to the Peaky Blinders franchise.
Following the successful delivery of the initial phase, TIME + SPACE transferred its interest in the operating vehicle at the end of 2024. The studio is now operated by BBC Studioworks, aligning with the development of the BBC’s new production facilities in Digbeth.
